Introduction

MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) is an ideal blending component for the production of lead-free, oxygen-containing and high-octane gasoline because of its high octane number.
SINOPEC started R&D of MTBE production technology at the beginning of the 1970’s and the first MTBE plant with a capacity of 5 KTA was developed at the end of the 1980's. From then on, improvement has been continuously made, the capacity increasingly expanded, many MTBE plants with capacity over 100 Kt/a have been designed and commissioned recently.
Butene-1 product is an important ethylene co-monomer. With continuous increase of ethylene throughput, more butene-1 is in demand. Butene-1 is obtained from the intermediate product of ethylene cracking C4 which is fractionated through butadiene extraction or butadiene hydrogenation and MTBE.

Technical Characteristics

The process adopts catalytic distillation, a deep conversion combined process with advantages of simple process flow, high conversion rate, low catalyst consumption and low utility cost.
Catalysts in the reaction section can be directly stacked in bulk into catalyst beds without any cloth pocket for packing catalysts as used in conventional catalytic distillation technique, which facilitates the catalyst loading/unloading operations and is advantageous to both improving the reaction efficiency and the investment saving.
Butene-1 process adopts fractionation to produce high-purity butene-1to satisfy the needs of polyethylene plant. For the butane-1 plant, adopting MTBE/butene-1 production technology can reduce the C4 amount in the fractionation columns, thus reducing energy consumption. By the integrated arrangement of the MTBE/Butene-1 production unit, the energy conservation, resource integration and efficiency increase can be achieved.
