Introduction

Styrene monomer (SM) is the important chemicals used in production of PS, ABS, SAN, SB, SBR, unsaturated polyester resins, ion-exchange resins and pharmaceuticals, etc.
Among the processes such as adiabatic dehydrogenation, isothermal dehydrogenation and dehydrogenation-selective oxidation, the vacuum adiabatic dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene (EB) is the most popular and mature process. S-SMT process is one of  the vacuum adiabatic dehydrogenation process to convert EB to SM.
SINOPEC has been working on the R&D of vacuum adiabatic EB dehydrogenation technology and catalyst for many years. Its GS series catalysts exhibits excellent performance in many units in China (including Taiwan) in terms of conversion and selectivity.

Technical Characteristics

1. The S-SMT process is a proprietary and commercially-proven technology for EB dehydrogenation over GS series catalysts in the presence of steam. The features of S-SMT process are as follows:
2. The dehydrogenation of EB is operated under vacuum and adiabatic conditions with a inter-stage reheater.
3. The proprietary GS series catalyst for dehydrogenation of EB to styrene are used in S-SMT process.
4. The dehydrogenation reactor is designed as a two-stage axial-radial reactors system with an incorporated interstage reheater, in effort to reach reasonable pressure drop and uniform liquid distribution. Both the reactor capacity and the catalyst are effectively used.
5. The dehydrogenated mixture is fractioned by the energy-saving distillation process and energy consumption is substantially reduced.
6. The process condensate and vent gas are fully treated in order to decrease the waste emissions. The waste emission, is controlled at very low level.
